Galveston Seawall Day Trip Guide for RV Travelers
Everything you need to know about spending a day on the Galveston Seawall — parking, beaches, food, and the best stops along 10 miles of Gulf Coast.
· Lazy D RV Park
Galveston's Seawall Boulevard is one of the most iconic stretches of road on the Texas Gulf Coast — 10 miles of ocean views, restaurants, shops, and beach access running along a massive granite seawall built after the devastating 1900 hurricane. From Lazy D RV Park in Hitchcock, you're about 20 minutes from the seawall. Here's how to make the most of your day.
Getting There from Hitchcock
The drive from Lazy D to the Galveston Seawall is straightforward:
- 1Head south on FM 2004 toward Texas City
- 2Merge onto I-45 South toward Galveston
- 3Cross the causeway onto Galveston Island
- 4Turn right on Seawall Boulevard (61st Street exit)
Total drive time is typically 20–25 minutes outside of peak summer weekends. On busy summer Saturdays, add 15–20 minutes for causeway traffic. Weekday visits are much smoother.
Parking Your Tow Vehicle on the Seawall
Most visitors leave their RV at the park and drive their tow vehicle or truck to Galveston. Parking on the seawall is metered and managed by the city. Here's what to know:
Seawall Metered Parking
Parallel parking along Seawall Blvd is metered. Rates are typically $1–$2/hour. Pay via the ParkMobile app or the meters. Most spots have a 2–4 hour limit.
Stewart Beach Parking Lot
Paid lot at the east end of the seawall near 1st Street. Good for full-day beach visits. Expect $10–$15 for the day.
East Beach Parking
Farther east, East Beach has a large lot and is the only Galveston beach that allows alcohol. Popular with a younger crowd.
Free Street Parking
Side streets off Seawall Blvd sometimes have free parking, but it fills fast on weekends. Arrive before 9 AM for the best spots.
Top Stops Along the Seawall
Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier
Amusement rides, games, and food right over the Gulf. The Ferris wheel view at sunset is worth the trip alone.
Murdoch's Souvenirs
The iconic Galveston souvenir shop on the seawall. Been there since 1910 in various forms. A must-stop.
Stewart Beach
Family-friendly beach with lifeguards, restrooms, and a pavilion. Best for kids and first-time Galveston visitors.
Seawall Urban Park
A 1.5-mile paved path along the seawall — great for walking, biking, or just watching the Gulf.
The Spot
Casual beachfront restaurant and bar at 3204 Seawall Blvd. Great burgers, cold drinks, and Gulf views from the deck.
Moody Gardens
Three glass pyramids housing an aquarium, rainforest, and discovery museum. Plan 3–4 hours for a full visit.
Best Times to Visit
The best time to visit. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, water is still warm through October, and temperatures are comfortable. Weekdays are especially quiet.
Galveston stays mild compared to the rest of Texas. The seawall is nearly empty. Great for walking and dining without the crowds. Water is too cold for swimming.
Spring break brings big crowds in March. April and May are excellent — warm weather, manageable crowds, and the beach is beautiful.
Peak season. Expect crowds, traffic, and higher parking fees. Go early (before 9 AM) or on weekdays to avoid the worst of it.
